There were some artists we admired for their talent, and then there were artists who became part of our lives. Dolly Parton was both.
For generations, Dolly made us laugh, cry, sing along and believe that maybe the world could be a little kinder than it sometimes seemed. From her humble beginnings in the Tennessee mountains to becoming one of the most beloved entertainers in the world, she built a career that was as extraordinary as the woman herself.
But Dolly’s lasting appeal was never just about her fame or her incredible talent. It was about the way she treated people, the way she approached her work and the joy she seemed to find in making other people happy.
There were countless reasons to love Dolly Parton. These are five we’ll always hold close.
1. Nobody Made Us Laugh Quite Like Dolly
Dolly Parton had a gift for making people laugh. Her jokes were hilarious, but it was her lightning-fast comebacks that made them even better. She could turn an awkward question into a punchline, gracefully steer a conversation in another direction, or simply poke fun at herself before anyone else had the chance. Somehow, she always delivered it with that unmistakable Dolly charm.
It was one of the things that made her interviews so much fun to watch. You never quite knew what she was going to say next, but you could almost guarantee you’d be laughing.
2. She Gave as Generously as She Loved
At Country Evolution, we’ve always loved sharing stories about artists who gave back. We believe philanthropy was an important part of using whatever platform or success someone had been given to make someone else’s life a little better. Dolly Parton certainly embraced that idea throughout her remarkable career.
One of her most recognizable philanthropic efforts was Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which provides free books to children from birth through age five, regardless of their family’s income. What began as a program in her home county of Sevier County, Tennessee, grew into a global effort that gifted hundreds of millions of books to children.
Dolly also stepped up when communities needed help. Following the devastating wildfires in the Great Smoky Mountains in 2016, she established the My People Fund, providing financial assistance to families who had lost their homes. Her generosity wasn’t simply about writing a check and moving on. She made it personal, showing the kind of compassion that became such a meaningful part of her legacy.
3. Dolly Parton Never Met a Hard Day’s Work She Didn’t Like
Dolly Parton’s work ethic was extraordinary, but what made it even more remarkable was that she never seemed content to simply repeat what had already worked. She was constantly dreaming up something new, branching out and finding another way to bring a little more Dolly into the world.
From Dollywood and Dollywood’s Splash Country to DreamMore Resort, HeartSong Lodge, Dolly Parton’s Stampede and Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show, her business ventures expanded far beyond music. She built an empire around her creativity and turned ideas that might have seemed impossible into experiences enjoyed by millions.
And even at the end of her life, Dolly was still planning for the future. According to a press release from her team, ten projects were in various stages of development at the time of her passing, including Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stops, Dolly Parton’s SongTeller Hotel, Dolly Dolls, Dolly’s Life Of Many Colors Museum, Dolly’s Cup Of Ambition Coffee, Dolly On The Holly, DOLLY: A True Original Musical On Broadway, the Kendra Scott x Dolly 9 to 5 Collection, Dolly’s Dog Treats and Dolly Bedding & Home Decor.
Her longtime manager Danny Nozell offered a remarkable glimpse into just how hard Dolly continued to work:
“Dolly worked up until the day she died. She loved seeing her dreams come to life, and loved knowing her work brought people joy. Ever the planner, Dolly worked with the team that she handpicked, for the past several years to build a project roadmap that will guide us for decades to come,” says her longtime manager Danny Nozell. “As the leader of the team responsible for overseeing her legacy, we will ensure the many dreams she had yet to fulfill are brought to life. Many projects were in various stages of development, and we want to be transparent with her fans about this fact. If you see unreleased music, products, books, experiences, and campaigns launched through official Dolly Parton channels, you can have confidence in knowing that she placed her personal stamp on it.”
And her work ethic wasn’t limited to business. Dolly was also deeply involved in the creation of her Broadway musical. When I interviewed Carrie St. Louis, one of the actresses portraying Dolly in the show, she told me just how involved Dolly had been with the production. She wasn’t simply a name on the poster. Dolly had been involved in rehearsals, fine-tuning scenes and offering personal insights that helped shape the musical.
Carrie described her as endlessly kind, humble and generous, someone who made everyone in the room feel important. That may have been one of the best examples of Dolly’s work ethic: She didn’t simply put her name on something and walk away. She cared about the details. She wanted things done right. And even when the project was enormous, she remained personally invested in bringing the dream to life.
4. Her Songs Became Part of Our Story
Dolly Parton’s music became part of the soundtrack of our lives. From the unforgettable heartbreak of “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” to the resilience of “9 to 5,” the warmth of “Coat of Many Colors” and the joyful sing-alongs that filled generations of country music fans, her songs had a way of staying with us. She wrote and recorded countless songs throughout her career, but the most special ones became timeless, passed from one generation to the next and given new meaning every time we heard them.
5. There Will Only Ever Be One Dolly
There were far more than five reasons to love Dolly Parton. She made us laugh, gave generously, worked harder than most people could imagine, filled our lives with unforgettable music and remained completely, wonderfully herself.
But perhaps that’s what made Dolly’s legacy so special. She didn’t just leave behind songs, businesses, books, movies and countless memories. She left behind a reminder that success could be used to make people smile, that hard work could turn a dream into reality and that there was nothing wrong with being exactly who you were.
Dolly spent her life making the world a little brighter. And while we’ll never get to hear that quick comeback from her again or watch her walk into a room with that unmistakable Dolly sparkle, the things she gave us will remain.
The songs will still play. The jokes will still make us laugh. The books will still find their way into children’s hands. The dreams she left behind will continue to come to life.
There will only ever be one Dolly. And we’ll always be grateful that we got to live in her world.
