Texas Hill Shares How They Selected Songs for Their Debut Album

Texas Hill is comprised of three powerhouse voices: Craig Wayne Boyd, Adam Wakefield, and Casey James. You may recognize them from their individual participation on The Voice and American Idol, and they’ve since joined together as a group with a distinctive sound and incredible harmonies.

Although they still plan to move forward with individual projects, fans were excited to learn that they joined forces to form a group. “As far as I’m concerned, my fans think it’s awesome,” Casey said.

Reality TV Competitions

Participating solo in a singing competition felt somewhat foreign to them, since they were used to being in a group where each person is equally invested. Craig grew up from a young age singing harmonies. “It’s one of the reasons that I called these boys about doing this project, is because I wanted to get back to the roots of just singing.”

Regarding the competitions themselves, they all agreed that one of the most surprising things was the editing. A contestant might complete a 30 minute filmed interview only to have it cut down to 30 seconds that airs. They said it was difficult to get a sense of the people on the show.

Overall, they had positive experiences on their respective shows. “Everybody there was really cool,” Adam said of The Voice. He felt that it was really legitimate and they seemed to want the contestants to succeed. “I would go back and do it again,” Craig agreed. “With a lot of exposure you can do just about anything.”

Grand Ole Opry

The band described their first Opry appearance as a band as “surreal.” They had all been on the stage before, outside of the group, but this was a special moment to be able to experience it as a trio. “To come together with my two brothers and share that experience was above and beyond belief to me,” Craig said.

Casey added that it was even more memorable because his wife and children were there. ‘It was just a beautiful night,” he said. Adam agreed that it was an elevated experience. He added, “It was cool to finally jam with the Opry band.”

Letting the Music Lead

One unique aspect of the group is the fact that each member takes the lead vocals on different songs. When asked how they choose the lead for each song, Casey explained, “We let the music do it.” It’s very clear to them who should do it based on the song and who wrote it.

The band writes as much as possible, as solo writers, with cowriters, and together. This strategy gives them a large catalog to narrow down the songs they want to record and perform.

Heaven Down Here Album

Recently, Texas Hill released Heaven Down Here, an album of songs they selected from their live shows. The project features eleven songs, plus an extended ‘encore version’ of “For The Love of It.”

As a way to narrow down the songs, they carefully reviewed their setlist and selected the most cohesive songs for the album. “They described where we were at mentally and emotionally,” Craig explained. The band also took into consideration the musicians that were going to play in the studio and where their strengths lie. Having everything work well together was the goal.

What’s Next for Texas Hill

The band has a lot of upcoming shows and they’re currently working on focus tracks to release in the near future. They’re excited for more people to hear their album, since it was recently released. For more information, visit https://www.texashillofficial.com/.
