Trey Calloway’s latest single, “Your Love Is Safe With Me,” is a high-energy country anthem that blends modern and traditional influences to celebrate love’s joy and lasting power. The autobiographical track is released just after Calloway’s October 2024 wedding to his wife, Raina, and is a reflection of the enduring love that defines his relationship. I sat down with him at CRS in Nashville to talk about the track.
The song, which highlights the security and longevity of true love, is a refreshing departure from country songs that focus solely on physical attraction. Calloway’s heartfelt lyrics, such as, “When I’m loving you over and over, when we’re married and children get older, you’ll believe your love is safe with me,” showcase the deep emotional connection he shares with his wife and the commitment they’ve made to each other. He shared in a press releas, “I hope this feel-good love song resonates with listeners who’ve found love and inspires others to want to find it.”
With its blend of classic and contemporary country elements, “Your Love Is Safe With Me” captures the essence of a love that grows stronger with time, fostering both personal growth and meaningful connections. Calloway described the song as an energetic mix of modern country with a hint of yesterday’s sounds, emphasizing the importance of a love that stands the test of time.
For Calloway, the song is deeply personal. He reflected on the three years he and Raina have spent doing long distance, with her pursuing a career as a civil engineer in Myrtle Beach while he followed his dreams in Nashville. Despite the physical distance, they keep their love alive through constant communication, date nights when possible, and a commitment to putting in the effort. Calloway credited Raina for her role in their relationship, acknowledging how challenging it can be to be with someone in the music industry. “It’s difficult to love somebody who is that busy, and she does it beautifully. If she wasn’t the person she is, we wouldn’t have made it.”
Their love story began at one of Calloway’s shows in Myrtle Beach, where Raina, initially thinking it was karaoke night, was impressed by his performance. After a bit of a slow start—Raina didn’t respond for a week after their first date—the two finally became inseparable, with Calloway fondly remembering their first night out. He noted, “She had to make me sweat for a week, I think.” What makes this song even more special is that Raina was in town working at Calloway’s apartment when they wrote it. She was the first person to hear it live and immediately urged him to record it.
The song’s success has been remarkable, becoming Calloway’s fastest week-one streaming song ever. Reflecting on the writing process, he noted how easy and organic it was to create the track with his cowriter, Dave. “This is one of those songs that kind of wrote itself,” he said. The song’s production by Grady Saxman added an infectious rockin’ backbeat, rounding out the song perfectly.
For Calloway, songwriting is often about finding a balance between being deeply personal and appealing to a broad audience. He draws inspiration from country legends like Alan Jackson, who has a unique ability to communicate complex emotions simply and universally. “That’s the battle that songwriters struggle with. How do you write a song that speaks to the multitudes, but also is very heartfelt and personal?”
As Calloway continues to build on the success of his debut album, Wanted Man, he’s already planning more music, including a single scheduled for release later this month. In the meantime, “Your Love Is Safe With Me” stands as a beautiful reminder of the strength of love, and a testament to Calloway’s dedication to his craft and his marriage.
