Country music hitmaker Neal McCoy reached a milestone ten years in the making today, January 7, marking a decade since he began reciting the Pledge of Allegiance every single day online. In an interview, McCoy shared how a simple moment in 2016 turned into a daily ritual that has grown into a meaningful community for thousands of viewers.
Early this morning, during the 7 a.m. Eastern hour, McCoy stood on the North Lawn of the White House on a brisk Washington, D.C. morning to recite the Pledge live on Facebook and Meta. Facing one of the newly erected American flags, the moment served as both a personal celebration and a tribute shared with the audience that has joined him daily for years.
“Patriotism is not political,” McCoy shared in a press release. “Today is a big milestone for me and for all the followers that tune in each day to recite the Pledge of Allegiance with me. I am honored to be in the nation’s capital and especially the White House. It is such a historical building and one of the most worldly known buildings, so to be welcomed inside the gates and to honor our flag and America here is really something.”
How It All Began on January 7, 2016
McCoy explained that the idea was born during a tense political season. In January 2016, as election conversations intensified, he felt compelled to make a simple statement of respect for the country rather than engage in division.
“Well, in January of 2016 the Republicans and the Democrats were already trying to figure out who they were going to run for the nominee, and they were already much slinging going on within their own parties,” McCoy said. “So I’m just going to tell people that I respect our flag and love our country. Have always and I will continue to do that no matter who gets in office.”
When he first went live, the reaction surprised him. Viewers questioned his health and wondered if something was wrong. The next day, he did it again. Then again the day after that. What started as a single moment quickly became a daily habit.
“I just wanted to take over that role,” he said, recalling memories of raising the flag in school. “Our country needs somebody that can show their respect for our flag, our love for the country, just by saying the Pledge of Allegiance, nothing more than that.”
Building a Daily Community
Over time, McCoy noticed the comments changing. Concern turned into encouragement, and eventually into routine participation. Many viewers now plan their mornings around the daily Pledge. Some schedule work breaks to join live, while others catch the replay later.
The sense of community has been especially meaningful for older viewers, including those who are homebound or living in nursing facilities.
“We have a lot of people, and some of them are older and can’t get out,” McCoy said. “They’ll write me and say, ‘I can’t tell you what this means to me… I just look forward to you coming live every morning. That gives me something to look forward to every day.’”
That responsibility is not lost on him. McCoy admitted that if he is even a few minutes late, people worry and reach out to make sure he is okay.
“‘The only person I talk to sometimes in a day is Neal,’” he said, recalling messages from viewers. Although he can’t respond to all of the comments, the viewers know he’s talking to them.
Commitment Through Travel and Tough Days
Reciting the Pledge every day for ten years has required planning and sacrifice. McCoy estimates it takes about an hour and a half each morning, including reading messages, sharing historical notes, and engaging with viewers. Whether he is home, on the road, or traveling between shows, he makes it a priority.
That dedication has led to some memorable moments, including reciting the Pledge in airports.
“I said it one time in the airport,” McCoy said with a laugh. “Some people were thinking, that’s cool. And the rest of them are going, what just happened?”
Influenced by Family and Freedom
McCoy’s commitment is deeply personal. His mother immigrated to the United States from the Philippines after meeting his father in the Army. Growing up, she spoke often about freedom and the sacrifices behind it.
“She grew up in a pretty tough environment,” McCoy said. “So when she came to the States, she just told us when we were young about our freedoms that we have. We never knew somebody fought and died for it. We just didn’t know.”
That perspective, he believes, shaped his appreciation for the country and the flag.
Celebrating at the White House
During the interview, McCoy shared hopes of marking the ten year anniversary at the White House. That plan became reality as he stood on the lawn, reciting the Pledge where history has unfolded for generations.
For viewers watching from home, the location mattered.
“They feel like they’re there with you,” he said. “Some of them are just so lonely… they feel like, ‘well, I’m out there with him.’”
Allied Flag Partnership and Commemorative Flags
As the daily Pledge gained momentum, it led to a collaboration with Allied Flag, a Kansas City based manufacturer producing American flags entirely in the United States. Together, they are working on commemorative flags tied to the ten year anniversary and the upcoming 250th anniversary of the country.
McCoy signs the boxes and hopes the flags offer another way for supporters to feel connected, especially those who may not have access to a flag in their living space.
Pride in USO Tours and Looking Ahead
While McCoy has earned multiple awards and enjoyed decades of success, he said his USO tours remain among his proudest achievements.
“Any one of those 17 USO tours ranks as high as anything I’ve done,” he said and expressed his admiration for all the troops that put their lives on the line to protect us.
Looking ahead to 2026, McCoy is most excited about continuing to perform and bring joy to audiences across the country.
“We’re just in a business that brings joy to people,” he said. “There’s no secret to it. You just be nice and be kind.”
