David Myhre Discusses Surreal Moments and Becoming a Solo Artist

Imagine having the opportunity to play on stage with a legendary artist. That’s how David Myhre got his start in Nashville, which was an impressive introduction to Music City.

In 2013 he had his first major show, playing guitar for The Band Perry at the CMA Awards, From there, he went on to play for legends like Tanya Tucker and Don Felder.

He recalled what it was like to play with Tucker and he said the sublimity of the situation hit him when they started rehearsing Delta Dawn for the first time. He said that it took a lot of preparation, learning to play songs that everyone’s already familiar with. When they started rehearsing, the band was figuring out harmonies with Tucker standing there. They played on the Ryman stage and Myhre stated that it was a fun moment when it all came together.

Myhre also plays in Don Felder’s band. He told the story of playing Hotel California for the first time and how surreal it was. His first big show was when they opened up for Boston with a crowd of 10,000 people. The show brought feelings of nervousness and excitement. He recalled, “If you mess up at all, the audience will be the first to know.” Myhre said it was a really cool experience to see the audience sing along with the songs they knew.

Myhre started playing guitar at ten years old after watching both of his sisters play for a short time. In elementary school, he connected with friends who began playing instruments at even younger ages and they started a band. At that time, he fell in love with the guitar, rock history, and music as a whole.

Playing with his childhood band taught him how to be a performer and grow into his own identity as an artist. He said that it’s great to learn from other musicians, but ultimately, it’s best to forge your own path, and that’s exactly what he did.

“Cowgirl”

Myhre has emerged as a solo artist and has released two singles thus far. “Cowgirl” is his latest release and he wrote it when he was back in Alaska visiting his family. The song began on the acoustic guitar and he built it out from there. Once he wrote the first verse of the song, everything seemed to come together. He crafted the song based on his wife, since she spent time doing rodeos in Mississippi. Her life provided the backdrop of the song and he wove in details about her, like her auburn hair.
