“It’s really sort of explaining, or at least not necessarily explaining as much as narrating, the context of relationships that just can’t seem to get to the finish line,” Lammonds explains. “Or they get to the finish line too soon, whatever.”

“It was the most authentic resignation I’ve ever had,” Lammonds recalls. “I mean, it’s pretty like this. It was the most authentic drive I ever had, to anywhere, to do anything, because I just knew. I didn’t believe it until I got there, but I just didn’t believe until I got there.”

“He’d always give me an idea, song ideas, and, you know, being a songwriter,” Lammonds recalls. “One day, he said, ‘I’ve got one that you have to pay attention to.’ And it was the song. Title was ‘Fried Baloney, Mustard Only.'”
Years later, while writing “Coffee, Black,” Lammonds remembered his suggestion and incorporated it into the song. The experience was a poignant reminder of the lasting impact that friendships can have on our lives.
