Anne Wilson has released a new live album, REBEL (Live From Lexington), showcasing a heartfelt performance captured at the Lexington Opera House in her hometown of Lexington, Kentucky. This 10-track album revisits songs from her acclaimed April 2024 release REBEL, while also including a powerful live rendition of her breakout hit, “My Jesus.”
The Heart Behind REBEL
Wilson’s inspiration for the album stemmed from her understanding of being a “rebel” for her faith. Reflecting on the album’s message, she shared, “I remember thinking ‘If being a follower of Jesus makes me a rebel, because Jesus was a rebel,’ I’m gonna stand up for my faith. In that moment, it all kind of clicked. I wrote the song, then the whole viewpoint of the record came into focus. We had that title on a white board, and every song we wrote after came from that question: what does it mean to be a rebel?”
This core belief influenced the album’s songwriting process, with each track exploring what it means to be true to oneself in today’s world.
Collaborations and Inspirations
Wilson collaborated with renowned artists to bring a fresh depth to REBEL. The studio album includes a duet with Christian music legend Chris Tomlin on “The Cross,” a song that moved Tomlin emotionally with its message. In another notable partnership, 2023 CMA Entertainer of the Year Lainey Wilson co-wrote and performed “Praying Woman” with Anne, highlighting their shared roots and values.
A Journey Through Life’s Trials
Wilson’s songwriting often stems from personal experiences, including the grief she felt after her brother’s passing. Songs like “Rain In The Rearview” were born from these moments of vulnerability, with the goal of conveying the courage to face loss and keep going. The album takes listeners on an emotional journey, beginning with energetic tracks like “Songs About Whiskey” and winding down with reflective pieces that remind listeners of what matters most.
Anne Wilson’s Rise in Christian Music
Since the success of her viral hit “My Jesus,” Wilson’s career has continued to ascend with Grammy nominations, Dove Awards, and a steady presence on the Grand Ole Opry stage. Despite her growing fame, she remains deeply connected to her Kentucky roots, valuing the lessons learned on her family’s century-old farm outside Lexington.
