Carolyn Miller: From New York to Nashville

We got the scoop on New York artist, Carolyn Miller, including information about her new single, how she got started in country music, and what it was like opening for Ashley McBryde.

1. How did you get started as an artist?

I actually went to the Boston Conservatory at Berklee College of Music and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. I have an extensive background as an actress and grew up working professionally in all areas of show biz. I’ve always been an artist and storyteller, so it was easy and natural to transition from screen/stage to concert settings! I just was hungry for more time on stage, more time singing, and I wasn’t totally satisfied creatively with what I was doing in my early 20s. I started exploring other sides of myself and so many doors opened that I never knew existed. It’s been the most thrilling journey!

2. In addition to music, you’ve done many voice-overs and commercials; are there any that that people would recognize?

A few! I did all the back-to-school ads for TJ Maxx for awhile, some work with Nickelodeon, even narrated 52 episodes of a children’s cartoon on PBS. My claim to fame is probably guest starring on Law and Order: SVU (the episode is called Doubt, if anyone wants to check it out!).

3. Many country artists got their start by listening to country music at an early age, but that wasn’t the case for you.  How did you discover it, and who were the first artists that made you fall in love with the genre?

Where I grew up, country music was never on the radio…seriously!! How crazy! Everyone where I’m from called it “country western” and automatically assumed it was all traditional country instruments like banjos, fiddles, singers with thick accents, cowboy boots and hats, etc. It’s just a lifestyle and sound that people couldn’t relate to living in and around Manhattan…but it’s such a common misconception! My first real introduction to it came from Carrie Underwood on American Idol 🙂 I remember watching her season and loving every song she sang. Every artist she covered. Every group she collaborated, such as Rascal Flatts. That show ended up being really educational for me and helped me discover a genre I had never been exposed to before. The storytelling aspects, the weight of the lyrics and melodies, the honesty and vulnerability the artists display – I’ve always loved and appreciated these qualities that carry such importance within the genre. I might be biased, but I truly believe country music offers something special that other kinds of music do not always give the listener.

4. What was it like opening for Ashley McBryde? In an Instagram video, she showed you some self-defense moves.  Did she have any other advice for music, touring, or anything else that stuck with you?

Haha! Yes, we had a blast! She is HILARIOUS and so real/genuine. We honestly had so much fun hanging out for a few hours post show. Our conversations didn’t get too deep, but being around her can’t help but make you feel that you gotta just be you, stay true to who you are, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. She’s the definition of bada*s!

5. You plan to release a couple more singles before releasing an album. Can you share any details on that (song titles/topics, timing, etc.)?

Yes! I’m hoping to just keep the momentum going and not keep people waiting for new music. I’d like to release new music every 2-3 months for a whole year and see where that takes me. The industry is ever changing but I think now more than ever, and it’s an exciting time to be releasing new singles.

6. Tell us a bit about your new single, “Summer Time.”

This was written by my friends Lance Carpenter, Leah Turner, and Blake Bollinger. Lance texted me one day and was like “check this out” – I heard the first 30 seconds and was hooked. I loved the storyline, could totally relate to it, and couldn’t get the melody out of my head!! It’s just a blast to perform live.

What’s your favorite summertime activity?

BBQ-ing and hanging poolside with friends and family 🙂
