Catching onto Runaway June

The movement for female empowerment has hit country music. Women are constantly being left out of the spotlight by many stations and award shows. Reba commented on the issue at the recent ACMs and said, “It doesn’t make me very happy, because we’ve got some very talented women out there who are working their butts off.”

Reba does have that right and Carrie Underwood is leading the tour of some amazingly talented women in her Cry Pretty Tour 360. The whole show is powered by females with Maddie & Tae opening, and Runaway June.

Runaway June is an up and coming trio of talented songstresses, Jennifer Wayne, Naomi Cooke and Hannah Mullholland. Their latest hit, “I can Buy my Own Drinks” continues the theme of female empowerment, where a man is not needed for a woman to have a good time out on the town. Proving women can be both independent, sexy and sassy: “I can buy my own drinks. I can pay my own tab. And at the end of the night when they cut on all the lights, I can call my own cab.” The hit was written by all three band members, along with  Hillary Lindsey and Josh Kear.

Their style is refreshingly real country. An echo of the Dixie Chicks, the harmony these ladies create together is remarkable. Their music encompases a bluegrass feel, with mandolin picking that still fits perfectly with their modern lyrics. All are skilled musicians in their own right, yet agree they sound best together.
