Exclusive Premiere: David Frizzell and Shelly West Reunite for New Duet of Lefty Frizzell Classic “I Love You a Thousand Ways”

David Frizzell and Shelly West

After more than three decades away from the spotlight, Shelly West has come out of retirement to reunite with longtime duet partner David Frizzell for a brand-new version of the Lefty Frizzell classic “I Love You a Thousand Ways.” The single, officially releasing tomorrow via StarVista Music, is premiering today exclusively on Country Evolution.

The track appears on Frizzell’s forthcoming album, David Frizzell Presents Frizzell & Friends: A Tribute to Brother Lefty Frizzell, arriving September 26. It bridges the past and present, reviving Lefty’s words through the unmistakable chemistry David and Shelly first shared in the early 1980s.

A Song with Deep Roots

Originally written and recorded by Lefty Frizzell, “I Love You a Thousand Ways” became his debut single and first #1 hit in 1950. For David, the song has been a lifelong companion.

“Shelly West was my duet partner in the ’80s and then retired 30 years ago. She came out of retirement just to record ‘I Love You a Thousand Ways’ together with me,” David shares. “I’ve been singing this song just about my entire life, and I actually have a recording of me singing it on a radio show back when I was nine years old.”

West calls the song timeless. “Sweet. That’s how I describe ‘I Love You a Thousand Ways,’” she reflects. “Can you imagine a man beckoning to you with these words, asking for forgiveness for straying, put to such a lovely melody? You hear Lefty in his most humble moment. I can sing myself to sleep hearing this song in my head. It’s a part of my youth, going back to being the bass player in the band, always in awe of David’s featured performance of the night. Back then, I was so bold as to sing harmonies on most every song he sang! While recording this session, like no other still, David did his ‘thing,’ making it challenging to follow his ever-changing melody with harmonies. I did my best, sometimes line by line, but I’m so proud I’m the girl chosen to accompany such country music royalty vocals.”

A Beloved Duo Returns

For fans of country music history, the reunion marks a special moment. In the early 1980s, David Frizzell and Shelly West rose to fame with their chart-topping hit “You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma.” Their GRAMMY-nominated collaborations, including “I Just Came Here to Dance,” “Another Honky-Tonk Night on Broadway,” and “A Texas State of Mind,” cemented them as one of the genre’s most beloved duos.

Frizzell commented on bringing new life to the song. “When I first thought about putting this Lefty Tribute together, “I Love You A Thousand Ways” was the song that came to my mind. I was so excited about re-recording this incredible song that has always been so dear to my heart. I also thought how much more incredible it would be to make a duet with it (and then of course Shelly came to mind). Of all the people who I know and have sang with, Shelly West was my first call and I thought how perfect it would be to have her come out of retirement and do another duet with me. I called Shelly and asked her ‘What is your favorite Lefty song?’ She said, “I Love You A Thousand Ways.I said GREAT, I am going in the studio and she said I will be there!

Honoring Lefty’s Legacy

The upcoming tribute album gathers an all-star cast of artists paying homage to Lefty Frizzell, one of country music’s most influential voices. Known for his distinctive vocal phrasing and classics like “If You’ve Got the Money, I’ve Got the Time” and “Long Black Veil,” Lefty left a profound mark on artists such as Merle Haggard and George Jones. He was posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1982.

For David, this project is not only a tribute but also a personal journey through family, history, and music. With a career spanning more than six decades, he continues to carry the torch for traditional country music. From his solo hit “I’m Gonna Hire a Wino to Decorate Our Home” to his duets with Shelly West, Frizzell has remained a powerful voice for keeping classic country alive.

A Premiere Worth Celebrating

At Country Evolution, we are thrilled to premiere “I Love You a Thousand Ways,” a song that bridges generations and reunites two of country’s most cherished voices. This recording is more than a duet, it’s a reminder of the lasting bonds in country music and the timeless artistry of David Frizzell, Shelly West, and Lefty Frizzell.
