Texas singer-songwriter Dustin Brown is gearing up to release his third full-length, self-titled album on March 28 via Smith Music Group. Country Evolution is excited to premiere his latest track, “Hard Hats,” alongside an exclusive interview delving into his journey and creative process.
“Hard Hats”: A Song for the Blue-Collar Workers
“Hard Hats” takes aim at a growing trend—people wearing workwear brands like Carhartt without ever having worked a day in a blue-collar job. Brown delivers sharp storytelling and a no-nonsense perspective, highlighting the contrast between those who live the life and those who merely wear the look.
With raw, gritty vocals and a deliberate, steady melody, the song showcases Brown’s ability to merge authenticity with pointed social commentary. While the lyrics capture the frustration of workers who earn their scars and calluses the hard way, the song also touches on pride, resilience, and the quiet moments of rest that make the grind worthwhile.

From Moody, Texas, to the Studio: Brown’s Musical Journey
Brown’s storytelling prowess comes from a life rich in experiences. Growing up in the small town of Moody, Texas, he spent much of his youth in solitude, cultivating introspection and self-reliance. By 12, he had begun writing songs, and as a teenager, he cut his teeth performing in biker bars.
His journey took him to Austin with a band, but when the group disbanded, Brown found himself exploring different paths, from commercial diving to working in the oil and gas industry. He also spent time backpacking through South America and the Philippines before ultimately finding his way back to music.

A Full-Length Album Born from an EP
Initially, Brown planned to release only an EP, but as he refined his sound and received industry encouragement, the project grew into a full-length album. He co-produced it with Ben Hussey, whom he met at the Larry Joe Taylor Songwriter Showcase. The album encapsulates his passion, struggles, and humor, drawing influence from legends like Blaze Foley, Steve Earle, Billy Joe Shaver, and Townes Van Zandt.
Finding His Voice
For Brown, discovering his true musical voice was a journey in itself. “I think my writing has always been there, but I was really searching for my voice. I was almost unconsciously doing a character voice,” he admitted. With the help of trusted friends, he stripped away the facade and embraced his natural sound, allowing his music to flow more authentically. “Once I found my voice, it affected everything—the way I wrote, the inflection in my songs, everything.”
He was inspired one day to really step into who he was as an artist. “I just kind of woke up and said, ‘Why am I trying so hard?’” he shared. He realized he just needed to lean into his unique self.
Life Experience as Inspiration
Brown’s travels and career detours deeply inform his music. After years of working in demanding industries and seeing the world, he recognized that music was his true calling.
His upcoming album embodies that realization, offering a mix of deeply personal reflections and engaging, foot-stomping tunes. Tracks like “Falcon 9” address the changes sweeping through small towns, while “Burn” explores the transition from reckless youth to maturity.
The Band and Production
Brown’s band brings the songs to life with a dynamic lineup featuring Christopher Smith on drums, Joel Allan and Tyler Ralston on lead guitar, James Bartosh on bass, and Rachel Cole providing backing vocals. Their collaboration ensures a rich, layered sound that stays true to Brown’s storytelling roots.
