Gavin Lee released his newest single “All You Gotta Do Is Dance” today and I asked him about it, along with a hobby I hadn’t even heard of.
“All You Gotta Do Is Dance”
“I really just wanted to write a 90s country song,” Lee said about the tune. Written alongside Will Rambeaux (Blake Shelton/Faith Hill/Lauren Alaina/Jo Dee Messina) and Sherrie’ Austin (George Strait/Blake Shelton/Tim McGraw & Faith Hill), the track is Lee’s eighth studio recording and is impacting country radio now.
The track is a throwback to signature 90s country tunes and fans can look forward to a video with a similar style, which features some very talented dancers. The line dance in the video was choreographed especially for Lee’s song. I asked whether he also danced in the video and he replied that he didn’t and joked, “If you could have four left feet, I’d have five.”
Lee shared the story behind how the song came to fruition. “My music has just kind of evolved naturally in the direction and vein that it’s in, and ‘All You Gotta Do Is Dance’ is right down the pipeline,“ he said. “I wanted to write a tune to move people to get on their feet. The storyline is about a girl that’s had a crappy week and heads to the club to dance away her problems and stress. It’s a perfect dance tune for the honky tonks and bars.”
Producer Bill McDermott shared his thoughts on the artist. “Gavin Lee is a true artist that will win you over right away. He’s absolutely a great singer with great songs. His delivery will knock you out and have you singing along!”
Beyond the Music
A fun fact about Gavin Lee is that he enjoys hog hunting in his free time. The notion of hunting hogs was completely foreign to me, as there aren’t any wild hogs where I’m from.
The concept fascinated me, so I asked about the details. Lee explained that there are several ways to approach the task, including shooting the hogs from a helicopter, using dogs, and baiting and shooting them. I’m only familiar with deer hunting, so as he shared more details, I realized how complicated the process is compared to hunting other animals (and seemingly more dangerous).
“They’re mean,” he began. “They will charge you, even after you shoot them.” Apparently, shooting them with a .22 can just bounce off of them if you don’t hit the right spots. Lee continued, “I’ve shot ‘em with a .22, it just makes ‘em mad.” He went on to tell me a story of how he shot one six times and it didn’t stop running at him. In what I can only imagine to be a moment of terror, his gun jammed. Lee finally killed it when it was just a few feet away.
The method that works best for him is training them to gravitate to a feeder bucket with a motor that spins it. After a few times, they figure out that the sound of the motor means that the food will be there. It takes about a month, but eventually, they’ll be there every night waiting. The entire process is a matter of outsmarting them.
