Working in the Past
Donna and Kerry Herrick grew up together in Spokane, Washington where they were both raised through music. Kerry started playing the guitar when he was nine years old.
“The first song I learned on it was Kumbaya by The Seekers, and I ain’t even joking,” he said. Prior to that, Kerry had learned how to play the harp and harmonica as well. For Donna, her story began earlier than Kerry’s in their respective childhoods.
She explained, “The first recording I had of me singing was from when I was four years old, and my mom could not believe her ears. I was so shy. I would not sing for anyone but my mom. She began to record me and I still have the tapes today.”
Years later, Donna and Kerry began to make music together thanks to the proximity between one another.
Donna recalled, “I was twelve and we were on my parent’s front porch. I was in junior high school, and the first song we sang together was ‘Lord Help Me Jesus’.”
Working Together Today
A lot of successful bands will tell you that the relationship between one and its band members is sort of like a marriage. For Donna and Kerry, their relationship beyond marriage has led to a long lasting and successful career. Kerry and Donna began their musical partnership in southern gospel before making the transition to country music. They first performed together at their church.
Donna said, “We performed at church because everyone was so kind… and captive audiences are the best way to start.” She added, “It was very scary though, because I was a big introvert, and I still am an introvert, but the difference now is that I perform for the people.”
Both of them agree that their chemistry has played an extremely vital role in their work together up to the present day.
Donna explained, “Chemistry plays a major role, because I can pretty much know what he is going to say or do before he does, and it’s vice versa. It’s huge to be able to do this with someone you have known basically your whole life.”
Newest Single ‘Some Kind of Lonesome’
On January 18, Herrick announced their latest single “Some Kind of Lonesome”. Herrick also released a music video to go alongside the majestic song.
Donna said, “I finished writing the song right before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. And before that, my mom was diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder. So she flew here to Nashville where I took care of her for four months before she ended up getting COVID-19. My mom passed away later in November, and that’s when the song started to take on a new meaning for me personally. So we dedicate ‘Some Kind of Lonesome’ to my mother.”
She also added, “We usually try not to create the same sound over and over. We believe that an album needs to be like a good book where every chapter has to be different and new.”
Upcoming Album ‘Sunderland Road’
“Some Kind of Lonesome” is the most recent single to be released off their upcoming summer album “Sunderland Road”. Herrick’s latest project incorporates their “Fleetwood Mac meets Amy Lou Harris” style of music into something ‘new’. The duo have stated that it may be a ‘double album’.
Kerry explains, “Sunderland Road is the place of our childhood. So, the word ‘inspirational’ is going to have a different meaning to us.”
Donna added, “It will be melodically different than our last album ‘Cottonfields’. And his time around we have GRAMMY Award-winning engineer Snake Reynolds alongside to help us.”
Snake Reynolds has worked on more than one hundred multi-platinum albums over his prolonged career. Herrick believe that Reynolds may be the missing link in their musical story.
What’s Next for Herrick
Herrick is going to be giving away their new single, album, and music videos for free. All you have to do is use think link. In addition, Herrick has an interactive four day experience planned on their website.
Donna laughed saying, “We wanted to do something different since a lot of artists do not give their music away for free.”
