Honoring a Legacy: The Return of ‘From Where I Stand’

From Where I Stand Boxed Set

In a monumental collaboration between the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum and Warner Music Nashville, the iconic box set “From Where I Stand: The Black Experience in Country Music” is set to make a triumphant return after over 25 years since its original release.

Rooted in History: The Genesis of “From Where I Stand”

Originally launched in 1998, this visionary project was spearheaded by Black country recording artist Cleve Francis and American Baptist College executive Nelson Wilson. Recognizing a significant gap in music history, they championed the creation of a collection that would honor the profound influence of Black musicians on country music—a heritage too long obscured.

A Fresh Perspective: Expanding the Narrative

Now, with renewed vigor and purpose, the museum and Warner Music Nashville are unveiling an expanded and redesigned version of “From Where I Stand.” This updated edition boasts 82 tracks spanning a century of music, with a special focus on “Reclaiming the Heritage,” a fourth disc showcasing a new wave of Black artists in country and Americana music, extending up to 2020.

Inclusive Design: The Visual Journey

Embracing the spirit of inclusivity and artistic expression, the CD set is adorned with traditional quilt designs from the Gee’s Bend community of Alabama, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of the music within. Each era of music is complemented by a quilt from the corresponding time period, adding a visual dimension to the auditory journey.

Exploring Online: The Immersive Experience

Accompanying the release is the launch of “From Where I Stand: The Online Experience” on May 31, offering free access to all the music, insightful essays, archival photographs, and historical track notes featured in the box set. Supplemental resources for educators and additional content will enrich the online platform, ensuring a comprehensive exploration of Black contributions to country music.

Celebrating in Style: The Concert Celebration

To commemorate the release in grand style, a star-studded concert, “From Where I Stand: The Concert Celebration,” will take place on June 18 at the museum’s CMA Theater. Co-produced by Rissi Palmer and Shannon Sanders, the event will feature performances by an array of artists represented in the box set, including Blanco Brown, Cowboy Troy, Darius Rucker, and more.

In an era marked by a renewed commitment to diversity and inclusivity, “From Where I Stand” emerges as a beacon of cultural significance and artistic excellence, inviting audiences to rediscover and honor the vibrant legacy of Black contributions to country music.
