During CRS 2021, we had the opportunity to connect with artists and learn more about them. JoLivi told us about how she got started in country music, her songwriting process, and more!
What was your first memory of listening to country music?
My first and forever memory would be in my mom’s car listening to James Taylor.
Who inspires you?
My grandfather has been my biggest inspiration since I was very little. He was a beautiful Hawaiian singer and my biggest fan!
What did you do before you became a country artist and what made you decide that this is what you needed to do full time?
I started singing more folk/pop (Colbie Caillat) kind of music then went to straight pop. I found myself always listening to the country radio stations and my manager one day asked me to write one. I enjoyed the writing process and the material I was producing, so we moved to Nashville.
I feel very fortunate that I get to [do this full time]. I worked in the service industry for quite some time and I’m thankful that at the time I could have a job that gave me time to pursue my singing career.
What’s your songwriting process like?
I always have a concept and melody prepared before I go to any songwriting session. Sometimes the first full hour of the session is just chatting about life. It’s definitely fun and I doubt it’s unique but I usually will have a shot of whiskey before any show. 🙂
What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a country artist?
Main advice I would give is to be the most authentic YOU that you can be. Be more than just the artist that you are. Talk about your favorite sports or whatever it is that interests you outside of your career. BE HUMAN!
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not making music or performing?
Oh my gosh!! EVerything. Golfing, going to the lake, park with my dogs, cooking, and pretty much anything that involves hanging with friends and family.
What are you most excited about for 2021?
SUMMER! I can’t wait to be out on the boat and on the lake. Also, to finally see my family in Hawai’i.
