Ken Wilber: From Theater to Country Music

Growing Up In Theater

Ken Wilber has been around more than just country music his whole life. Whether the New York native was performing on stage at his high school theater or playing in bars with his former band, Ken Wilber has developed into a musical veteran.

Ken explains “…my path started similarly to most folks. I first began to sing in church. In addition, I was involved in a high school chorus. From there, I branched off in a weird direction. I transitioned into theater at the age of fourteen which was my entrance into performing. During my theater career, I did a lot of musicals.”

Not only did Ken Wilber perform in his high school theater, but he also sang with other community theater groups.

Where Ken Wilber Got His Sound

Ken’s musical style is like a melting pot. The artist is a big fan of blues, jazz, and folk music. As a result, he loves incorporating these styles of music into his own sound.

“I grew up listening to guys in the 90’s like Garth Brooks, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Merle Haggard, and George Ducas,” Ken states.

During the early stages of his career, the artist joined 80’s southern rock group J.D. Mistress.

Ken explains that “…they brought me in because they were looking for some vocal help. We performed at bars in New York, and we actually got to open for the band Blackfoot in Albany, New York.”

J.D. Mistress played together for only six months before Ken decided to take on a solo career in music.

Ken Wilber’s ‘Freedom Song’ and More

At the end of 2020, Ken released a total of three new singles that include: “I Could Get Used to You,” “Bread on the Table,” and “Freedom Song.”

Ken Wilber’s “Freedom Song,” co-written by Sonny LeMaire, is actually a cover of the original version performed by the band Blackberry Smoke.

Ken explains, “I had no idea who they [Blackberry Smoke] were when I first heard of them. So, I decided to go down to the store and purchase some of their records. After I listened to them, I instantly became a fan. And more recently, I got to see them perform live in concert. So this story is pretty amazing because I got a great song out of it, and I became a fan of a group I had never heard of before.”

What 2021 Holds for Ken Wilber

Later on this year, around the beginning of summer, Ken plans to release his second album titled Ran Out of Sky.

The country music artist states, “The second album should be smoother than my first, but what’s kind of cool about this upcoming album is that it will be all over the place in terms of style. There will be traditional country, ‘jazzy’ country, and tracks that will be a little more ‘rock and roll’. Further, I hope that everyone will be able to hear all the musical genres I was influenced by growing up.”
