At Country Evolution, we love to feature artists that stand up for what they believe in and inspire others. Liddy Clark wrote a song titled “Shot Down (Stand Up)” a few months after the Parkland shootings in Florida. Because Clark grew up in the area, it affected her greatly.
The shooting happened during her freshman year while she was living 3,000 miles away from her hometown. Her heart ached, having to experience it from afar. She knew all of the places that the shooter was in and how close it was to her parents’ house and brother’s school.
She knew she wanted to write about how strongly she felt about this issue. “I wanted to make a statement with this song,” she explained.
Clark performed the song at the Wear Orange Day event in Parkland. “Parkland was the first place to hear it and that was really important to me,” she said. Clark worked with her friends at USC for the video. “It was a very deep compassion project.”
Getting Started in Music
Clark performed in her school’s talent show when she was just seven years old. At the time, her grandmother had finished a genealogy project where she learned that she is related to Pocahontas. Clark decided to sing “Colors of the Wind” at the show to pay tribute to her ancestors. After realizing her talent, she asked her parents to sign her up for vocal lessons. After she began lessons, Clark expanded her creative repertoire and added acting, guitar, and modeling to her list of experiences.
At thirteen years old, Clark hired a new vocal coach who showed her how to write songs and play guitar. They started writing songs together, which was a detour from the typical songwriter who begins writing alone.
Clark has released several songs in addition to “Shot Down (Stand Up),” including “Friendly Fire,” “Hit and Run,” as well as a few cover songs. Clark re-released “Hit and Run” because she’s working on an album and wanted to introduce her new sound. She also shot a music video to accompany it.
Clark’s Christmas Cover
Clark covered the Christmas song, “Do You Hear What I Hear,” which was featured on a country Christmas album available at Cracker Barrel. “I was so honored because there are so many amazing artists on it.”
Her favorite Christmas tradition is when her dad makes a sausage and cream cheese croissant bake. He only makes it on Christmas morning and every year, she helps him make it.
