MTV Adds “Best Country” Category to 2025 VMAs: Full Nominee List Revealed

2025 VMA Awards

For the first time in its history, the MTV Video Music Awards will honor country music with a brand-new “Best Country” category. The announcement comes as part of the 2025 VMA nominations, unveiled today by CBS and MTV. This marks a significant milestone for country artists and fans, as the genre gains a larger presence on one of pop culture’s biggest nights.

The 2025 VMAs will broadcast live from UBS Arena in New York on Sunday, September 7 at 8PM ET/5PM PT, airing on CBS, simulcast on MTV, and available to stream via Paramount+ in the U.S. The show will also air globally across 150+ countries.

Country Music Takes the Spotlight

The nominees for the newly added Best Country category include some of the genre’s biggest names:

  • Chris Stapleton – “Think I’m In Love With You”
  • Cody Johnson with Carrie Underwood – “I’m Gonna Love You”
  • Jelly Roll – “Liar”
  • Lainey Wilson – “4x4xU”
  • Megan Moroney – “Am I Okay?”
  • Morgan Wallen – “Smile”

The addition of this category reflects the growing cultural and commercial influence of country music, especially as artists like Wallen and Wilson cross into mainstream territory.

Lainey Wilson, Megan Moroney, Jelly Roll, Cody Johnson, and Blake Shelton are among the 33 first-time nominees at this year’s show.

New Additions Across Genres

Country isn’t the only genre getting a spotlight. MTV has also introduced a “Best Pop Artist” category, further acknowledging evolving audience tastes. Ariana Grande, Charli XCX, Justin Bieber, Lorde, Miley Cyrus, Sabrina Carpenter, and Tate McRae are all nominated in the new pop category.

Lady Gaga Leads the Pack

With 12 nominations, Lady Gaga tops this year’s list, earning nods in major categories like Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Album. Gaga is followed closely by Bruno Mars (11), Kendrick Lamar (10), ROSÉ and Sabrina Carpenter (8 each), and Ariana Grande and The Weeknd (7 each).
