Paige King Johnson released her latest single “Just Like You” today. We’re excited to share the song with you, as well as an exclusive video of her performing the song.
Johnson wanted to write a love song with a twist, so she asked her college friend Regan Rousseau, her go-to for love songs, to write it with her. Johnson had the first verse in her phone for a long time and finally had the opportunity to finish it.
The song is about the give and take of relationships and how each of us has our shortcomings. “We all screw up,” she said candidly, “I’ll be the first to admit that.”
In a relationship, whether it’s romantic, a friendship or a family member, disappointment is inevitable. Johnson said the beautiful part is the other person giving them grace and unconditional love.
Johnson has an appreciation for other songwriters who have the ability to tug at our heartstrings. “That’s why I love country music so much and why I fell in love with it,” she stated, “the storytelling side of it and the songwriting side.”
Journey to Nashville
Johnson moved to Nashville at age 17 to attend Belmont University and pursue a career in music. She described Nashville as being a big city with a small town feel and was pleasantly surprised at how great a community it is. “Everybody is so welcoming and so willing to cheer you on,” she said. She moved there not knowing anyone but now she can’t walk into a show or a writing session without running into someone.
Outside of music, Johnson enjoys working out and being outdoors. Her other hobby, cooking and baking, balances it out and is a different kind of creative outlet for her. Her favorite recipe is one she makes for family holidays–Apple Dapple cake, from her church’s recipe book. “If I don’t make it one year, I think they would probably shun me,” she joked.
Giving Back to the Community
Johnson started a dinner theater when she was just a sophomore in high school. Growing up in a small town, there weren’t a lot of opportunities to play and practice live, so she wanted to give back to the community and create a space where artists can hone their craft.
Additionally, Johnson created her very own festival called “The Country Yard Party,” which was a couple years in the making. The lineup included herself and a few of her artist friends. “It was such a good day,” she said. The festival gave people something to look forward to during these trying times and the artists thoroughly enjoyed getting back to the stage.
Upcoming Videos
Johnson released a lyric video today, along with the song. She said, “Lyrics are my bread and butter and I nerd out reading them.” As a fan of others’ music, she likes to see them written out in a creative form. Additionally, she’ll be releasing a music video, with Pam Tillis as the director.
