Scotty Hasting, a Purple Heart recipient and country artist, has partnered with chart-topping singer Lee Brice and the legendary Dolly Parton to release a poignant new version of “Til The Last Shot’s Fired.” The song, available from October 18, deeply resonates with Hasting’s experiences and pays tribute to the sacrifices of military veterans.
The Song’s Journey
Originally penned by Doug Johnson and Rob Crosby, “Til The Last Shot’s Fired” was first recorded by Trace Adkins with the West Point Choir. For Hasting, the song carries a profound personal connection. He first encountered the track during his recovery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he was healing from ten gunshot wounds sustained in Afghanistan. “The first time I heard ‘Til The Last Shot’s Fired,’ I was at Walter Reed,” he shared. “I started sobbing, and I knew I had to live life to the fullest for my friends who would never have the opportunity to.”
Fast forward to 2023, a chance meeting with Doug Johnson in Nashville opened doors for Hasting, leading to recording and publishing deals with Black River Entertainment. His newly recorded version of the song marks a significant, full-circle moment, made even more powerful with Brice and Parton’s contributions.
A Tribute Across Time
The ballad narrates stories of soldiers across different eras, beginning with the Civil War and moving through World War II, Vietnam, and the mountains of Afghanistan. The lyrics convey the grim realities of war while expressing a deep longing for peace. Lee Brice takes on the second verse, reflecting on the brutal conditions faced by soldiers at Omaha Beach in 1944. “This song shook me to the core the first time I heard it,” shared Brice. “I am a huge supporter of our military community, and every word of ‘Til The Last Shot’s Fired’ makes me think of the surreal circumstances our brave service members endure to keep us safe. It was an honor to record this song with Scotty, who is a huge talent, and of course, the one and only Dolly being a part of this made it even more special.”
Dolly Parton’s Emotional Touch
Dolly Parton’s presence brings a unique element to the song, adding a layer of hope amidst the solemn narrative. Her verse offers a prayer for peace, echoing the sentiments of many who yearn for an end to conflict. She gently closes the song with a whispered plea, “Pray for Peace,” creating a moment of profound reflection. “I am proud to be a part of this wonderful song,” said Parton. “May we all lift up a prayer for peace.”
