Shane Owens is Revitalizing Traditional Country Music

If you’ve been craving more traditional country music, Shane Owens is someone who can give it to you.

Hailing from Alabama, he’s country to the core. He grew up on George Jones, hunting, fishing, and hometown football. He even processes and harvests his own meat. Shane has been making the rounds and gaining traction throughout the US, acquiring fans wherever he goes. He said, “We’ve been so blessed, you know, we have a fanbase nationwide. It’s a great blessing to have as many fans as I’ve got that believe in what I’m doing with traditional country music.

Shane has worked with some of the best musicians in Nashville, with Randy Travis producing his album. Shane says it’s “a dream come true” to work with Randy and have him as a friend.

When Shane was a boy, he spent the night at his grandparents every Saturday night and they watched the Grand Ole Opry. That was where he fell in love with traditional country music. His grandmother was his biggest influence and always sang old hymns when he was around. “She was like my hero,” he said. He was raised in a very traditional way as well.  His family placed an importance on manners and all the kids knew better than to misbehave.

Shane is as authentic as they come. “I couldn’t fake it if I tried,” he began.  I’m country and that’s the way I’m going to stay”

Shane sees the pendulum swinging toward traditional country music in the near future.  We asked him about radio moving so far from its roots and surprisingly, he didn’t bash the artists that sound more like they should be placed in another genre. He said, “Everybody’s talented in their own way. That’s what makes the world go ‘round. If we were all the same, it’d be quite boring.” He added that those artists aren’t necessarily bad, they are just a different style. And if someone works hard, touring a lot of the year, he said, “I have respect for every artist out there that does that.”

I personally think that’s an admirable perspective to have. Although we many want traditional country music to return in full force, we can’t discount the talented people that are working hard, despite their departure from the genre.

Additionally, I think artists like Shane will be able to bring back what so many people are hungry for and what’s missing from country radio today. Yes, there might be a slice of the pie for the feel-good, bro-country songs, but the traditional side needs a space, too.
