Neo-traditional country trio The Castellows surprised fans Friday with the release of a new track, “Broke,” from their forthcoming EP, Homecoming. The song, written by the three sisters—Ellie, Powell, and Lily Balkcom—alongside Erik Dylan, draws deeply from classic country roots, telling a story from the perspective of a coal miner’s wife.
“’Broke’ was one of the first songs we wrote in town, so we’d been wanting to cut it for a really long time,” The Castellows shared. “There are a lot of great songs about coal miners that are out there, and we kinda wanted to have our own. We created this story, and like any story, you connect with the emotions of the people in the song. ‘Broke’ shows the artistic side of writing and storytelling through song. We’ve always loved songs that tell a story and lyrics that help you picture it in your head.”
