“Bill Gaither asked me to go on some tour dates to Michigan and Ohio with the Gaither Vocal Band. On the night of the second concert, Bill said, ‘I have an idea for this song.’ We kicked around the first two lines of the song… Later that night after the show, Bill and I finished the song and put a little demo together.”
Initially pitched to the gospel group The Nelons, their version of the song was released alongside a lyric video just days before a tragic plane crash claimed the lives of the group’s members and their crew. Despite this heartbreaking loss, the song soared, reaching #1 on gospel charts and staying there for six weeks.
The Gatlin Brothers’ version introduces new verses and slight lyrical changes, honoring the song’s legacy while bringing their signature sound to the composition.
