Thompson Square just released not one, but two new songs! “Country in My Soul” is the radio single and “Are We Gonna Dance” is the b-side track released alongside it.
“Country in My Soul” is a song people will certainly be singing along to and aside from it being a great melody, it really makes people think about what makes them who they are. We asked Shawna and Keifer about the songs and about what’s coming up for them this year.
What has influenced you most throughout your lives to become the people you are today?
At the top of that list without a doubt, my parents. I’m proud of how I was raised and I find myself leaning more and more on those teachings – and I’m passing many of them on to my son. Also, there are so many great people who inspire me. They come from everywhere and you know them when you see them. I’m thankful for the wisdom they have earned through life and experience, and I’m thankful for them passing it along. Music has always inspired me. Great music with great melodies and great lyrics that pull something out of me. (Keifer)
Growing up in a rural community absolutely has everything to do with the person I am today. I learned so much about hard work sacrifice and having the willingness to help someone in need from lots of people in my small hometown. I was also very fortunate in that I was able to spend a ton of time with my mammaw growing up. She came from the generation that worked hard from sunup to sundown because you had to to get by. Some of my fondest memories are sitting with her under the carport shelling peas, hearing her hum old gospel hymns and, of course, Wednesday night prayer meeting and Sunday morning church services. (Shawna)
“Are We Gonna Dance” is another song that’s sure to become a fan-favorite. What inspired you to release it alongside the new radio single?
Such a great song! Once we reconnected with Benny he played this song with his belief that it was a hit for us. The same song was pitched to us in 2017 from David Lee Murphy’s manager, Doug Casmas. We always loved the song but it was the wrong time. We all feel now that it is the perfect time to release it. (Keifer)
How excited are you to be back working with Benny Brown?
It feels extremely serendipitous. Benny and Stoney Creek Records changed our lives. We had a string of hits there and will be forever grateful for all of the success that we enjoyed the first time around with Benny and that team. After leaving that label and taking a couple years to make music independently and to enjoy our baby boy, it’s like déjà vu all of a sudden – and it feels good. We’re so looking forward to what the future holds and we couldn’t be more excited about this new music.
Have you played either of these live yet? What’s the fan reaction been like?
Yes to both. The reaction has been amazing. I know that our fans are more than ready for new music from us. And we’re ready to give it to them. These first two are just the beginning of what we feel is going to be our best record yet.
You recently played a show to support Folds of Honor. What does it mean to you to be able to use your talent to give back?
Both of our fathers were in the military. So any chance we get to play for our men and women of the armed forces, we do. It’s such an important part of our life and it’s the least we can do for all that they do for all Americans. Folds of Honor is an amazing organization that provides life-changing scholarships to children of fallen soldiers to further their education. Without Folds of Honor, so many children would not have those opportunities.
You have a lot of tour dates coming up. What’s your favorite part about touring?
Just being in front of people who came to see you will always be my favorite part. Being blessed to play hit songs and sharing new music with them is such an amazing feeling that never gets old. (Keifer)
With all the craziness the last three years because of Covid, I definitely feel super grateful every time we are able to step onto a stage. I just want all of our fans to know how much we have missed them. And how important they are to us. To be able to stand up there every night, seeing and hearing them sing along will forever be my favorite part. And of course when Cooper is able to join us on the road it’s so sweet to see him in the wings singing along or when he wants to come out and sing with us on stage. (Shawna)
What else are you looking forward to in 2022?
Finishing this record and touring it. And just getting back in the groove with our amazing team at Quartz Hill and getting to work.
