Country Evolution is proud to premiere the official music video for “Secondhand Hold On Me,” the latest single from Virginia-born neo-traditionalist Trace Nixon. Shot in the heart of Nashville and featuring a blend of storytelling and timeless honky-tonk sound, the video brings a vivid visual to Nixon’s cleverly written single, released in June.
The song was co-written by Nixon and Ashley Grant, who also stars in the video as the mysterious, unforgettable woman at the heart of the track’s narrative. Directed by William Gawley, the video captures the energy of the song and complements Nixon’s smooth, classic country vocals.
From Forrest Gump to the Heart of a Song
The idea for “Secondhand Hold On Me” came from an unexpected source: a scene in Forrest Gump. Nixon shares,
“The idea for this song came from a Facebook video clip of the New Year’s Eve scene in Forrest Gump, where he says, ‘She tasted like cigarettes.’ I started thinking how funny it would’ve been if Forrest was into that kind of girl and after reflecting on some of my own wilder days, the song came together pretty quickly. I’ve always been a big fan of play-on-words and lines with double meanings, so this was a really fun one to write.”
With lines like “Now I’m smoking Marlboro reds while she’s livin’ rent-free in my head,” the track blends humor, heartbreak, and a throwback sound that will resonate with fans of Alan Jackson, Keith Whitley, and early George Strait.
Filmed in Nashville’s Most Iconic Country Setting
The video was filmed at The Station Inn and downtown Nashville in March, placing Nixon in one of the city’s most iconic and intimate venues. The shoot was a collaborative effort, featuring production credits that include:
- Director: William Gawley
- Producer: Michelle Robertson
- Director of Photography: Wayne Taylor
- Editing and coloring: Color Synch Visuals
William Gawley talked about the experience and working with Trace. “It felt entirely appropriate to capture the essence of such an extraordinary traditional Country artist at the legendary Station Inn, a venue where the very icons who inspired Trace have graced the stage. The camera truly adores Trace Nixon, and I believe the world will fall in love with him as well.”
Additionally, Michelle Robertson shared her thoughts on the collaboration and video location. “Collaborating with Trace has been a breath of fresh air. As a fan of traditional ‘90s Country music, he embodies the essence of that golden era! Scouting locations is always an enjoyable aspect of my role, and I was certain that The Station Inn would be the perfect backdrop for the performance. We also captured some b-roll around downtown Nashville, including shots in front of Chief’s and amidst the vibrant crowds on Broadway. This video evokes a sense of nostalgia that I believe will truly connect with his fans.”

A Music Journey Rooted in Family and Tradition
Nixon’s path to country music was practically destiny. Raised in a small town near Charlottesville, Virginia, and the son of two professional musicians (Nick and Michelle Nixon), Trace was immersed in music from the beginning.
“The artists and writers I’ve always admired didn’t have to say much to say a lot and be impactful,” Nixon recalls. “That always stuck with me.”
Balancing athletics and songwriting in college, Nixon played baseball at Shenandoah University before turning his focus toward music full-time. In 2023, he launched his band Gone Country, released his debut single “This One’s For Alan” in 2024, and plans to release his first EP Hand Me Down Name, in October.
“These five original songs reflect the music that influenced me growing up and that made me who I am today,” he says. “I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out, so all I can hope for is that the EP will resonate with the folks who listen.”
