Finding resilience in the music scene at a young age, Mikayla Lane showed her fierce attitude and rock-solid determination in a recent interview. At just 15 years old, Lane is performing at some of Nashville’s finest music venues, drawing crowds and gaining fans with every show. The Kentucky native explained her future aspirations and how she is continuing to play for her fans during the pandemic.
At age 5, Lane would sing from day until dawn. “My parents would hear me sing and took me to a vocal coach in the area. I did my first performance when I was 6 (at) a small festival in town. Ever since I have loved it,” the singer commented.
With the strength and grit of Miranda Lambert and the bright style of Kacey Musgraves, Lane is using her enthusiastic essence as her edge in Music City. She explained,”My sound is modern country with inflections from older country. I really have a different style.”
As a young girl, Lane described that finding management who sees her professionalism and maturity has been a battle she has fought for years. This battle has armored her with a nerve that has driven her to work harder at her music.
She expanded, “I still come in contact with people who (you) can tell aren’t going to take you seriously because of my age. I have worked really hard. I want to be successful. I want to learn but I also don’t want to let people just walk all over me.”
Some venues, she explained, won’t let her perform on their stage because of her age. Each setback has allowed the artist to find her inner strength, fierceness, and resilience, making the young artist nothing but a promising figure in the country music scene.
Alongside playing venues across Nashville and recently releasing new music, Lane is also entering 10th grade and attending high school full time. “I go to a private school in Tulsa (Oklahoma) and that is super great because they work well with me on my music and (with) knowing that I am going to be gone,” the singer explained.
With her educational flexibility, Lane has been able to take strides in her music career, even recently releasing an EPK. Lane described, “My EPK was filmed in Nashville. It was something I had never done before so it was new for me but it was a learning experience and it was super fun. The EPK was a behind the scenes look on my life and what I want to portray in my music.” The singer said that the overall experience was one in which she hopes represents what she wants her fans to hear from her. “(It) was a really cool way to let people get to know me and share my opinions in a really short video,” Lane said.
With the EPK settling into Lane’s music archive, the artist explained that her future involves song-writing and the release of new music. “This year I have tried to hammer out some great songs. I am really excited because the next release that we are going to do is going to be a song that I wrote. My EP, Rooftop Nights has been out for a little while and it is time to get the new stuff out there,” Lane commented.
Another goal of hers is to increase her presence on her social media outlets. Showcasing her music career on her digital platforms has ultimately been a valuable learning experience for the young singer, especially during the excess time she has had due to the pandemic. Lane explained, “Social media has definitely been a learning thing for me. I haven’t always done it. It hasn’t been a main focus of mine. Ever since COVID-19 happened, everything has been digital and it has been so important to have a presence on social media.” The singer has been keeping herself and her audience busy by doing frequent livestream performances with her friends and with other musicians.
As for next steps, Lane expressed that she hopes fans stay tuned and watch for her written single to be released in the near future. This will be Lane’s first original single which she explained she is very excited about.
