Dakota Poorman Releases “Hippie @ Heart”

Today, Dakota Poorman released his latest single “Hippie @ Heart.” We sat down with him in Nashville to discuss the song and his style.

“Hippie @ Heart”

Poorman described “Hippie @ Heart ” as a modern day old-school rock n roll and tune said it’s like Bob Seger meets a marijuana farm.

It’s a nostalgic song, with references to older tunes and artists that we all love. “It’s one of my favorite songs to play,” he said. “Hippie @ Heart” will appear on Poorman’s upcoming album, due out this July.

Malcolm Springer (who has also worked alongside Matchbox 20, Collective Soul, Eric Clapton, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Nappy Roots, among others) produced the song at the House of Blues studios in Nashville. He said, “‘Hippie @ Heart’ is what I call ‘hardcore honky tonk’ country and showcases Dakota’s raw and realistic larger than life vocals over the meanest, leanest bar band you’ve ever heard. and…that’s exactly what you’ll hear!”

“Red, White, and Blue Collar” Country

Poorman prides himself on being authentic, from his music to who he is as a person. He shared, “If I’m not staying true to myself, what am I doing?”

He dubbed his unique style “Red, White, and Blue Collar” Country and explained, “I’m for the working man. I’m for the working class. I’m for the working woman.” Poorman brings a much-needed perspective and sound to country music in a time where a lot of it sounds the same. “Being red, white, and blue collar, I’m me. And if you don’t like it, tough shit.

Poorman also expressed gratitude that his label encourages him to be authentic. It’s always refreshing when a label supports an artist and doesn’t try to change them.

Supporting Military and Law Enforcement

At Country Evolution, we always appreciate when artists support military and law enforcement. Poorman frequently plays shows for soldiers, police officers, and their families.

For families with deployed loved ones, it can be a difficult time. “It’s something small, but means something so big to a lot of families. Music is a way for them to cope.”

When I asked what inspired him to start playing these shows, Poorman explained that his dad’s side of the family is all military and he has many cousins in active duty and retired. “If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be able to do what I do. None of us would.”
