Big Loud Records recording artist Jake Worthington has just released his full-length, highly-anticipated, self-titled debut album. I sat down with him at CRS in Nashville to discuss it, including his thoughts on fans’ initial reactions, the making of the album, and more.
In an era where country music is often diluted by other genres, Worthington’s debut album is a refreshing reminder of the genre’s traditional roots. His style is a reflection of his Texas upbringing, infused with the sounds of classic country legends like Ray Price, Merle Haggard, George Jones, and George Strait. Worthington’s commitment to preserving the essence of honky-tonk and dance hall ditties is evident in his self-titled album, produced by Joey Moi.
With its thirteen tracks, including collaborations with labelmate ERNEST, the album is a perfect blend of modern and classic sounds. Worthington’s deep-drawling baritone and soulful fiddle and steel instrumentation deliver a time-traveling experience that takes us back to the heart of country music. The album’s release marks the solidification of a genuine country artist who is dedicated to keeping the flame of traditional country music alive.
“I don’t mind being a dark horse,” he says, welcoming his role in bringing traditional country music back to the forefront of the genre. “Blame it on my raising, but I think there ought to be room for country in country music.”
Recent Singles
Worthington’s recent release of two singles off his record left his fans awe-struck, with “Next New Thing” and “State You Left Me In” already racking up tens of thousands of listens in just a couple of weeks. Prior to their release, he shared preview videos to Instagram that generated an outpouring of comments from eager listeners. When asked about the enthusiastic feedback, Worthington expressed his gratitude, saying, “It feels pretty great to know that people want to hear country music. I’m grateful that folks put my songs in that world.”
Making the Album
The artist is grateful for the time and space he was given to work on his debut album. He attributes his growth and development to the support and encouragement of some pretty great folks in the country music industry who share his passion for traditional country music. He speaks highly of the people he worked with, from the musicians to the writers and producer. “There are so many talented people in this world and in country music,” he says. “There’s nothing to compare getting in the studio and having the opportunity to work with the best in the world. I’ll never forget that experience.”
For Worthington, the album’s success ultimately comes down to the songs. “It starts with the songs,” he asserts. “There’s nothing like the high of writing a song and getting your point across.”
