Singer-songwriter Annie Bosko has always believed music should feel “cinematic,” sparking emotion and possibility in the listener. Her debut album California Cowgirl, released today, embodies that philosophy with a nostalgic yet fresh sound inspired by the 80s and 90s country she grew up on.

Raised in a third-generation farming family in California, Bosko’s connection to the country lifestyle is the real deal. Drawing influence from California country legends like Merle Haggard and Dwight Yoakam and powerhouse vocalists including Wynonna Judd, Patty Loveless, and Shania Twain, Bosko describes the nineteen-track record as “femme-forward,” highlighting themes of strength, honesty, and self-determination.

“The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve really become proud of where I come from, of who I am, of my roots, and I’ve gone from hiding it to the opposite,” she shared during our interview. “It’s like, no, this is what makes me, me. And yeah, I am a California cowgirl.”

Overcoming Setbacks and Earning Industry Respect

The road to releasing California Cowgirl wasn’t an easy one. Bosko overcame vocal cord surgery and years of rejection while staying determined to pursue her artistry. Her perseverance caught the attention of country music legends like Vince Gill, Raul Malo, and Dwight Yoakam, who offered encouragement and collaborations along the way.

Yoakam, in particular, became a mentor. “I think Dwight has been the most supportive. As far as bringing me on his podcast, bringing me out to sing at his shows, doing the duet with me, really, before anyone else did, before I had anything really going on, before I had a record deal or anything. He really supported me.” She noted that many people might not immediately associate him with having such a big heart or being such a strong supporter, but that’s exactly what he has been for her, offering encouragement to keep going, which is something she believes would surprise a lot of people.

The album features collaborations with Yoakam, Darius Rucker, and Joe Nichols, while also showcasing Bosko’s own versatility as a writer and performer.

Stories Behind the Songs

Bosko shared with us the inspirations behind some of the tracks on California Cowgirl:

  • “Watch Me” – A song about resilience and proving doubters wrong. “I’ve always taken a door closing as gasoline to fuel me to get there,” Bosko said.
  • “California Cowgirl” – The title track reflects her pride in her roots. “I’m a boots-over-heels girl and a no make-up homebody when I’m not glammed up onstage. It’s about pushing back against the stereotypes that say it’s all slick.”
“God Winks” – Inspired by her meeting with Vince Gill. “There is something spiritual and divine when it’s meant to be. This song is based on that.”
  • “Country Girls! (Who Run the World)” – A fiery anthem celebrating women. Bosko even played harmonica on the track. “I ended up playing harmonica on the record which was a fun challenge!”
  • “Heart Burn” (feat. Dwight Yoakam) – A desert-inspired duet. “To perform this as a duet with Dwight — the King of California country — was a major milestone.”

Her tracklist also features timeless classics like Kris Kristofferson’s “Help Me Make It Through the Night” and Garth Brooks’ “New Way to Fly,” showing her reverence for the tradition she’s stepping into.

Faith, Inspiration, and Finding Strength

Bosko’s faith also plays a role in her songwriting. Reflecting on the theme behind “God Winks,” she explained, “I am a believer that you ask for the help and you ask for the guidance, and you ask for God to light the way he’ll show you. It might not always be what you want or how you want, but I do think God will show you.” She also said that it’s important to actively ask for guidance and then remain aware and perceptive to the signs unfolding around you.

When asked about setbacks, Bosko admitted she has moments of doubt, but her resilience always wins out. “We all have our down days and our moments of doubt. […] And so it’s not that I don’t feel kicked down or defeated at times, because I absolutely do, but I’ve always kept going, you know what I mean, and I and I’ve always tried to let that fuel me.”

Looking Ahead

In addition to celebrating her debut album, Bosko is looking forward to a major career milestone: performing alongside Dolly Parton in Las Vegas. “I think I might pass out. I really hope I get to meet her. Legend. I mean, as far as entertainers, it just doesn’t get bigger. Guy, girl, country, pop, you know what I mean? She surpasses all those things. It’s crazy.”

With California Cowgirl, Bosko not only embraces her identity but also cements her place as one of country music’s most authentic rising voices. Rooted in tradition yet undeniably modern, the album paints a portrait of an artist unafraid to show both grit and grace.
