It has been 50 years since Vince Gill left his home in Oklahoma to pursue music. That decision took him through Kentucky, California, and ultimately Nashville, with tours spanning the globe. Along the way, Gill found success as a member of groups including Mountain Smoke, Bluegrass Alliance, Boone Creek, Sundance, Pure Prairie League, Rodney Crowell’s Notorious Cherry Bombs, The Time Jumpers, and most recently, the Eagles. He has also built an extraordinary career as a solo artist.
Last week, Gill solidified his relationship with his longtime label by signing a lifetime deal with MCA Records. To honor his milestone, he is curating a yearlong series of EPs titled 50 Years From Home. The first in the collection, I Gave You Everything I Had, will be released worldwide on October 17.
Digging Into a Treasure Trove of Songs
“I have this treasure trove of songs,” Gill explained. “And I started wracking my brain about how I could find a way to really celebrate this music.”
From more than 100 recent compositions, Gill selected tracks that are deeply personal and tied to the themes he wanted each EP to carry. Every volume in 50 Years From Home will include new songs and one piece from his catalog, carefully chosen to complement the rest of the collection.
For I Gave You Everything I Had, Gill included six brand-new songs and a re-recording of his iconic “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” this time with a newly written third verse.
Personal Touches, From Songwriting to Artwork
Gill has taken a hands-on approach with every detail, even choosing the cover art himself. For the first EP, he selected a photograph of his 1942 Martin D-28 Herringbone guitar, purchased in 1975 with his entire life savings after selling a Martin gifted to him by his parents. The guitar represents his leap of faith at the very start of his career.
“The more I’ve done it, the more I’ve learned how to do it better—how to be more patient, where not to waste my time, what to do and not to do, to be willing to edit myself and keep digging,” Gill reflected. “Experience is experience; there is no shortcut. This is what comes from doing this for 50 years.”
Songs of Emotion, Family, and Reflection
Gill describes the EP’s tracks as “all very personal.” He added, “I love the emotion of music; that’s what I go to it for. It stirs something inside me that I can’t describe. I just feel it, and the songs I do and the way I sing them and the way I play them, tries to convey those emotions.”
The project features contributions from longtime collaborators and friends, including Paul Franklin, Tom Bukovac, Jedd Hughes, Jack Schneider, John Jarvis, Stuart Duncan, Jim “Moose” Brown, and Russ Carson. Family is also at the heart of the recordings, with Amy Grant and daughters Jenny and Corrina Gill providing background vocals.
Themes of Nostalgia and Loss
The EP explores themes of nostalgia, sentimentality, and mourning. The title track and “Made Me” reflect on Gill’s journey in music, while “Her Heart” honors Amy Grant’s kindness and generosity. “I Hope Everybody Lives to Be 100,” written after the passing of John Prine, offers a hopeful wish in a country-flavored setting.
Loss also weaves through the collection. “Benny’s Song” recalls the morning Gill’s longtime friend and guitar tech Benny Garcia passed away, while “When a Soldier Dies” gives voice to those left behind. The extended version of “Go Rest High on That Mountain” closes the EP with added depth and poignancy.
