Acclaimed songwriter and recording artist Benjamin Tod has released a surprise acoustic version of “My Pride”, a raw and emotional track that dives deep into the pain of regret and the struggle to move forward.
“I’ve read many times more recently young folks say, ‘I don’t have any regrets,’” Tod shared. “All I can make of that is they are unaware of their impact. If you don’t have regrets, you either have no genuine empathy or you’re not taking many risks.”
While many songs explore loss and heartbreak, “My Pride” hits closer to home for Tod. “This song is about one of the biggest mistakes I ever made as a husband,” he explained. “It’s one of those moments you never quite swallow, like an argument before someone’s death or leaving a scar on someone you love.”
“My Pride” is Honest Storytelling at Its Core
From its opening verse, “Where did we go wrong? Could you trace it in a song or track it from the blood drops on the ground?”, Tod’s lyrics pull listeners into an emotional reckoning. The refrain, “My pride won’t let me turn around,” serves as both confession and condemnation, underscoring the tension between regret and pride.
The song’s instrumentation, featuring Billy Contreras’s fiddle and Tebbs Karney’s pedal steel, complements Tod’s storytelling with haunting beauty. “There are things you can never take back in this world. There are mistakes we make that we can never redeem in this life,” Tod said. “I’m not saying let regret strangle your life or that you should live in the shadow of your worst moments. Regret with all your heart, then get off your ass and do something about it.”
