George Ducas Discusses Latest Album and Amazing Fans

It’s always impressive when an artist can continually evolve throughout their career. Not only has George Ducas evolved, but he’s one of the versatile artists that we appreciate so much. In addition to his own music, he has written many songs for other artists, including Dixie Chicks, Garth Brooks, Sara Evans, Randy Rogers Band, and many more.

George Ducas’ Newest Album

Ducas released his latest album in late 2019, titled Yellow Rose Motel. It’s an album that elicits the wisdom and grit of traditional country music, yet can compete with the reimagined sound of today. Ducas showcases his expertly-honed craft of storytelling and songwriting throughout the record.

He recorded it throughout 2017 and 2018. “I’m always writing songs,” he shared. Ducas explained that he would record when he thought he had a good batch of songs ready, when they stylistically fit him. Then, he would go in and wait for the next group. He said that some artists will lock themselves away until their entire album is complete, but that’s not his style.

Ducas released the songs to the publiic in groups, too. He had volumes of a few songs that he’d release and the album tied everything together.

The album includes a variety of songs to keep the listener engaged. “Unlove You” describes the all-too-common feeling of not being able to get over someone, even if you’re trying your hardest. Both “I Got This” and “Eastwood” have a confident vibe that people strive for.

“Country Badass” provides a humorous glimpse into a subculture of people pretending to be something they’re not, from the music they listen to, to the clothes they wear.

“Yellow Rose Motel”

For the title track, Ducas wanted a concept song that told a story. He wanted it to be reminiscent of Willie Nelson’s Red Headed Stranger album, since it really struck him when he first heard it as a young boy. The guitar in Nelson’s song was so clear that Ducas taught himself how to play it at 12 years old with a $100 Yamaha in his bedroom.

In his song, the main character kills a lady that tries to steal one of his horses, along with her lover. “I’ve never killed anybody in a song before,” he said, “and in this song I kill two people.” It was something that he wanted to try and he executed it very well.

Fans on Fire

One thing that’s so impressive about Ducas is the dedication of his fans. CMT selected his song “Eastwood” for the fan-voted CMT 12 Pack last summer and it stayed at number one for three weeks. This is quite the accomplishment, considering a lot of the artists he was competing against had major label support with large marketing teams behind them.

Ducas attributes a lot of his fan support to social media. Fans who knew his previous work continued to stay with him through the journey. He’s also acquired new fans from platforms like Instagram, where people are looking for new music.
